The Scottish Highlands Top is inspired by ancient Abbey ruins in Scotland and is worked top-down, seamless, and in the round. It uses some of the same design elements as the Scottish Highlands Shawl, has slight A-line shaping, and an angled hemline for a casual and flattering fit.
We’ve had so much fun with the shawl in both one color and two-color versions, that I designed this lightweight top that can also be worked in one or two colors (or any combination thereof). Check out the test projects to see some of the color combinations!
There’s a nice balance between stockinette stitch and lace work with an angled hemline and ¾ sleeves that could easily be made shorter (or longer). This lightweight top will be perfect for warmer weather and looks great worn over jeans, a skirt, or shorts.
Scottish Highlands really shows off hand dyed yarns and will look great in any fingering or light sport weight yarn with good drape and stitch definition.
Construction is a hybrid between circular yoke and raglan for ease of working lace at the neckline and for best fit of sleeves. Short rows lower the front neckline and provide the angled hemline (before lace is worked) for a flattering longer length at sides and back.
The instructions are both charted and written and the pattern has been professionally tech edited and tested.
