I found using size 30 thread and a number 9 steel crochet hook, I was able to get decent sized bookmark. I suggest using no more than 6 letters, unless you like having a really long bookmark.

Other suggestions for this pattern: You could use a worsted weight yarn and a J hook to make each letter, and make a personalized scarf.
