Scrap Happy Floral Granny Square Afghan
This is a fun afghan to make, using up all your left over scrap yarn ball remnants. I originally designed the floral square 13 years ago for a client’s afghan, and offset it, checkerboard style, with closed granny squares. It’s still as fresh and perfect for today as it was back then.
In addition to the background color that ties everything together, each closed granny square is 7 rows and uses as many different colors as you’d like. In the example shown, I used 5 colors (I used the orange twice). The stitches used in these squares are chain, double crochet, and half double crochet.
Each floral square uses a small amount of 3 different colored yarns. The stitches used are chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, extended double crochet, treble crochet and slip stitch.
There is only the barest minimum of abbreviations in the pattern, as most of it is written in regular conversational English. So as long as you are familiar with crocheting the stitches mentioned (an explanation of how to make an extended double crochet stitch is included), this pattern can be enjoyed by a beginner.
This pattern will work with any yarn, and the yarn thickness and hook size will determine the square size. It is difficult to estimate a gauge for this, because so many different stitch types are used. But the squares shown were made using worsted weight yarns with an I-9 hook, and measure 9 inches square when finished.
The completed afghan size is 7 rows wide by 9 rows long, or 63 inches wide by 81 inches long.
