Scrappy Shawl
Scrappy Shawl
I love scraps! I love to play with the little strands of beauty; to mix and match – or mismatch!! – colors. My latest color play resulted in thist Scrappy Shawl. It has a good size: it is long enough to be cozy, but not too overwhelmingly large. It is a very wearable piece, and a lot of fun to knit.
One side of the shawl is worked in stripes, using up all the wonderful scraps of lovely yarns. The other side is a large square, knit in one-color lace. The lace is very simple and easy, making this a good starting point for a first-time lace-knitter.
Size
Finished measurements after blocking: 225 x 97 cm / 88.5 x 38 inches
Yardage
900 meters (250 gr) fingering weight scraps in different colors and
600 meters (150 gr) fingering weight in one color for the lace section – the sample uses Yak sock yarn in the colorway Shadow from A Knitters World: https://www.aknittersworld.dk/
Needles
4 mm / US 6, preferably circular needles
Gauge
14 stitches x 15 rows in garter = 10 x 10 cm. Gauge is not really important in a shawl – look at the fabric you’re creating, and decide if you like it! This shawl is very easy to make smaller or larger, so you can just compensate for a too loose or too tight gauge this way.
If you want to make it smaller or larger, you just have to make sure that you have the correct stitch count before starting the lace section: Your stitch count on either side of the center stitch needs to be a multiple of 10 plus 4 stitches for the edging!
Stripes
Each stripe consists of 10 rows of garter. Continue the stripes throughout sections 1 and 2, while at the same time following the instructions for the shaping of the shawl.
Section 3, the lace section, is worked in a single color.
