The Sea in a Sieve Hat references Edward Lear’s nonsense poem “The Jumblies” from 1871. A whimsical bout of fun, the poem is a favorite among young children who appreciate both its singsong rhythm and odd story. The hat – which draws to mind both a sieve’s porosity and the Jumblies’ green heads – is crocheted in the round, starting from the crown. It is worked into a hemisphere of arched stitches, with several rows of denser stitches to start the ruffled brim and give it some shape from which to depart.
