So apparently there are some pretty strange facts about octopuses (yes, it’s octopuses, not octopi or octopodes, according to Katherine Harmon Courage, author of “Octopus!”).
The strangest, and saddest, I think is that when they decide to have offspring, it’s pretty much the end of their life, both male and female. Believe it or not, after mating, the male wanders off to die, and the female dies shortly after her eggs hatch. Terrifying.
Another equally strange but less sad fact is that their arms have minds of their own. Literally. In fact, two-thirds of their neurons are in their arms instead of their heads!
These are just two of the weird things I learned and I encourage you to find out more about this fascinating creature!
Enjoy making this double knit Sea Octopus with its eight arms, (with minds of their own!), curling around the center circle frame. If you’re unfamiliar with double knitting, this small potholder is a great way to learn this knitting technique. Both sides are the same, except with reversed colors. You’ll get the accomplishment of finishing a beautiful project and the confidence of adding a new skill to your knitting basket.
With this instantly downloadable PDF pattern, you’ll have all the help you need to get started!
This pattern includes written instructions, a chart, and links to video tutorials for the invisible cast on, invisible bind off, slip stitch edging, and I-cord loop.
