Sea Urchin hat pattern in Rowan Felted Tweed

This hat design was originally created in January 2019, after living on Fair Isle for a couple of months, then staying in Brindister on the West Coast of Shetland. Now, I’m excited to redesign the hat in Rowan Felted Tweed, which is a thicker yarn to that used in the original pattern. You can read this pattern as a design sheet because the pattern can be followed to the stitch and colour, or you can use it as a springboard to develop your own ideas by choosing your colours and even a different 25 row star motif to the one I have chosen to incorporate into your hat pattern. I have added an alternative 25 row Star motif in B/w at the end of this pattern, which you could use instead of the one I have. You can make this hat your design too.
PLEASE NOTE THAT I KNITTED THIS HAT IN UK3MM NEEDLES, there is not an exact alternative US needle

I would love for you, the knitter, designer, maker, lover of yarn
and the tactile act of knitting, to make this hat in whichever
colours and with whatever tree and star motif you would like.
Any motif will make the same shape as the decrease around the
tree creates the crown. Have fun, post photos of your finished
hats to Instagram and tag @traceydoxey so that I can see them.

Yarn needed - 9 colours of Rowan Felted Tweed. I used - Fjord, Maritime, Ciel, Bilberry, Tawny, Rage, Pink Bliss, French Mustard & Ultra marine – Or you can use your own scraps of Rowan Felted Tweed from your stash. The hat needs about 1/3rd of a ball of each colour except the centre accent line which just needs a
tiny length, so, if you have leftover yarns, try them in this pattern.

Size – One size – Generous/ Slouchy. Measurement from bottom of rib to centre of crown 21cm, measurement around the rib 58cm. You could make this smaller by using 2:75mm needles.

Gauge using 3mm needles - 30 stitches and 36 rows. I highly recommend knitting a gauge swatch.

Needles – 1 pair of regular 3mm (US 3mm) needles to cast on the stitches for the rib.
One 3mm (US 3mm) circular needle, plus four 3mm dpns to finish the crown as it decreases.
