Imagine: You’ve been recruited to join an underwater expedition investigating unsubstantiated reports of a Megalodon sighting - an unsettling thought, because this massive beast supposedly went extinct many millions of years ago. An old, creaky submarine (partially) retrofitted for modern research propels you deep into the cold ocean under the direction of your - shall we say, intense - captain. Your grandmother’s blue shawl, the one treasured item you brought on the journey, is wrapped tightly around your shoulders as you stare at the old sonar screens, wondering…could Megalodon REALLY be out there, waiting to be found?

A collaboration with Banshee Dyes, this semi-circular shawl was inspired by the incredible deep blue “Megalodon” colorway. Alternating garter and stockinette stripes are followed by a sea of garter stitch, which is interspersed with three standout rows containing bobbles in the center section and eyelets in the two side sections. The shawl is finished with an I-cord bind off.

Yarn: Approx. 975 yds / 892 m of fingering weight yarn. Sample shown in Banshee Dyes Scary Sock (80% Merino Wool, 20% Nylon; 400yds / 366m, 3.5oz / 100g per skein), in “Megalodon” colorway.

Size: Longest edge is around 62” / 157 cm; Depth is around 19” / 48 cm. The final measurements will vary based on how gently or aggressively you choose to block.

Gauge: 22 sts / 48 rows to 4” / 10 cm in blocked garter stitch pattern, 24 sts / 38 rows to 4” / 10 cm in blocked stockinette stitch pattern. Attaining gauge isn’t critical for this pattern as long as you have enough yarn to complete the shawl in your own gauge and you are happy with the resulting size.

Needles: Size US 4 / 3.5 mm circular needles (recommended cable size of 32” / 80cm or 40” / 100cm), or whatever attains the gauge you want.

Notions: Darning needle, stitch markers, removeable stitch marker (optional)
