I would suggest using a #2 Sport weight yarn so that you get a reasonable sized mug rug.

To get the multi color effect I used Catania by Schachenmayr

Yarn Usage per set of 2 mug rugs:
Col A - 2 x balls (250m) - Catania Solids
Col B - 2 x balls (250m) - Catania Colors

with a 2.5mm hook.
