The colors in these mitts are inspired by the winter sky, ocean, tide pools, mussel shells and golden-brown rockweed here on the Maine coast. One of the best places to explore tide pools is the expansive intertidal area at Seawall in Acadia National Park. While these mitts call for a total of 6 colors, only 2 are used in any given row. If you carry each color for a few sts both before and after it is needed, there will be very little finishing required.

SIZES: The mitts are available in 2 sizes, adult average and adult large. These sizes are achieved by changes in gauge/needle size, so it is very important to monitor your gauge. The average size fits hands measuring up to 7 inches in circumference, while the large size will fit hands measuring up to 8.25 inches in circumference. The same chart is used for both sizes.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: The average size has a 6.4-inch circumference and is 8.2 inches in length. The large size has a 7.7-inch circumference and is 8.6 inches in length. The length measurement includes the cuff. Changes to gauge or yarn weight, or adding length, may require extra yarn.

GAUGE: This varies with size and is measured over the blocked colorwork pattern. The listed gauge for the average size is 30 sts and 32 rnds = 4 inches/10 cm, and for the large size is 25 sts and 30 rnds = 4 inches/10 cm.

NEEDLES: Choose needles based on your preferred method of working small circumferences in the round. I used the magic-loop method and a 32-inch circular needle, but DPNs are also options. Suggested needle size for the average size is US3 (3.25mm) for the gauge needle. Suggested needle size for the large size is US4 (3.5mm) for the gauge needle. However, use whatever size you need to obtain gauge, and then 1 size smaller for the ribbed edge.

YARN: 1 skein of each of the following colors will be sufficient for either size—the actual yardage range is given in parentheses: Russet (50-65 yards), Raw (10-15 yards), Mallard (25-30 yards), Eau de Nil ( 15-20 yards), Mulberry (15-20 yards) and Rose (10-15 yards).

SKILLS USED: working in the round, increasing (make one), using a chart, working 2-color colorwork, setting aside sts on a holder.
