Secret Dreams Shawl
We all have secret dreams, wishes we hold close to our hearts but never fully reach for. We take small steps towards our goals, but we’re afraid to do more because what if things don’t quite work out? The Secret Dreams Shawl is an encouragement to go for it - make a drastic change, take a walk along the edge, reach out - because sometimes a little bit of risk is the only way to make dreams happen.
The body of the Secret Dreams Shawl is a wish held close, with a series of barely noticeable changes that create a softly curved crescent. The edging is a dramatic change with completely different stitches worked along the edge, adding a gorgeous finishing touch that makes the shawl a dream come true.
The Secret Dreams Shawl is long and skinny, making it easy to wrap around your neck or shoulders in a number of ways. It’s perfect for spring - it adds enough warmth to be cozy on cooler days, but its lightweight enough to be comfortable on warmer days!
The pattern is ideal for using up sock sets - use one full skein for the body and the contrast mini for the edging! There are also detailed instructions for customizing the shaping and size of the shawl. The pattern uses only simple stitches, but it relies on being able to count rows without issue.
Sample
This was the featured pattern for the Emperor’s New Groove box from the Yarnover Truck club! The colorway is called Yzma and it’s on the Luxe Fingering base from Apple Tree Knits.
Yarn, Yardage, and Colors
The full shawl uses approximately 500yds/113g fingering weight yarn. The body takes 450yds/100g in and the edging uses 50yds/13g. Work the full shawl in one color as shown in the sample, or use a contrast mini for the edging! The pattern is especially ideal for sock sets.
The body of the shawl looks amazing in almost any solid or tonal colorway. The shorter rows showcase self-striping beautifully and the pattern can be adjusted to work with a gradient and use up every scrap of yarn. It also works well with variegated skeins, since there’s no texture or lace in the body. The edging works best in a solid or tonal that lets the lace show up.
If you’re working this in a gradient, I recommend using the entire gradient for the body and adding a contrast edging. If the gradient is used for the edging too, the last color of the gradient will end up running along the bottom of the entire shawl.
Size, Shape, and Adjustments
The Secret Dreams Shawl is gentle crescent that’s long and skinny, with a 67”/170cm wingspan and measuring 9”/23cm down the back. The pattern includes instructions for tweaking the shape so it’s wider/narrower, longer/shorter, or some combination thereof.

For details on what the printer-friendly version includes, see this page. If you are working from the printer-friendly version and are having trouble with a pattern, I strongly recommend checking the regular version. The text will be easier to read and it might have more detailed instructions.
