This pattern is created as a beginner friendly introduction to illusion knitting. The hidden image appears when the scarf is moved to capture the light from different angles. Straight on it appears to just be stripes, then from the side or at a slight turn, the squares appear. Although a gauge is given, there is plenty of room for changing that to suit the knitter. The illusion works best if the project is worked on slightly smaller needles than the usual recommended for the yarn weight. Option variations could be adding a fringe or lacy edging, or a variegated yarn with a solid contrasting yarn. Two colors are needed or a variation that always combines a darker and a lighter color in the contrasting pattern work. Example: a variegated rainbow yarn and a black yarn, or a pastel variegated and a royal blue. There are many possible combinations, and a test swatch is recommended to make sure the visual effect is working.
