The illusion works best if the project is worked on slightly smaller needles than the usual recommended for the yarn weight. Option variations could be adding a fringe or lacy edging, or a variegated yarn with a solid contrasting yarn. Two colors are needed or a variation that always combines a darker and a lighter color in the contrasting pattern work. Example: a variegated rainbow yarn and a black yarn, or a pastel variegated and a royal blue. There are many possible combinations, and a test swatch is recommended to make sure the visual effect is working.
