This pattern produces a cowl that can be worn either wrapped double around the neck for added warmth, or worn without wrapping as an infinity scarf. The charted colorwork design for this cowl was inspired by the vest fabric on the woman’s bunad from Selbu, Norway; although, it does not intend to replicate it in a literal fashion.
Traditional rendering of this pattern would use red and black yarn, but the design would work equally well if modified by using two strands of a single color whereby the MC is interpreted as a knit stitch and CC a purl stitch to create a moral subtle, textured version of the design.
Two colors of yarn are used in this design:
Main Color (MC/red): 83g/166 yds
Contrast Color (CC/black): 100g/200 yds
(Yarn quantities listed are ample to allow for differing habits with color changes, cast-ons, bind-offs, etc.)
Additional notions: A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in ends; stitch markers are recommended to indicate beginning of round and to indicate changes in color work patterns.
The pattern includes charts for the color work as well as for the textured braid that sets off the bottom and top edges of the cowl.
