Selbu Mittens in my mind mean Norway. I love to imagine my Grandfather’s trunk packed full of knitwear for the new world. I remember that trunk that was in my Grandma Hansen’s summer kitchen. I used to imagine that it was filled with handknit everything. These mittens have symbols of Norway, flowers representing blooming where you are planted (or transplanted), and my grandmother’s flower garden , a compass for the voyage, hearts for love, loss, longing and courage, and stars to represent the North Star, and the sea of stars my great grandfather saw crossing the Atlantic three times.

These mittens are in my book The Nordic Knitting Primer. To see more of my work, knitting philosophy , video tutorials and more. Visit Scandiwork.com
