Is it a snowflake? Is it a Selbu rose? It’s both! Here is a lovely snowy version of the iconic Norwegian Selbu rose. These beautiful eight leaf roses are a traditional motif from the Selbu region of Norway. In the mid-nineteenth century this motif was incorporated into mittens, stockings, and hats. For weddings, many pairs of these mittens would be knitted by the bride and the girls of the village eager to show off their needlework skills. They would then be given as gifts to the male guests. They were most often red and white or black and white.

My hat pattern contains instructions to make this hat two ways. The first has just the Selbu roses/snowflakes with a plain crown. The second adds a sprinkling of decorative “lice” to the crown. Yes, they’re really called lice! It’s a traditional Norwegian motif used extensively in warm woolen knitwear that looks like little insects have landed on the top of your hat. So cute!

I have included charts with the light color dominant and the dark color dominant. I find it is easier to follow a chart when it matches my selected color scheme. I think you will, too. There are 4 charts in all, and directions for two sizes, adult large and child’s small. Size can also be adjusted by using larger or smaller yarn and needles.

I think this pattern is best suited to a person with some knowledge of stranded color work. It is knit in the round with either circular or double pointed needles. It requires worsted weight wool.

I am always available for questions and pattern support. Also, the internet is packed with great tutorials on stranded color work knitting. I would be glad to direct you to my favorites as needed.
