Selbu Symmetry Cowl
The symmetry found in many traditional Selbu patterns suggested a way to play with color combinations to produce four different looks with just one accessory. Not only is this generously-sized four-color cowl reversible, but it can be worn with either opening on top. Right-side up or upside-down, it is as stylish as it is warm.
Constructed in seamless reversible double knitting in the round, the cowl has an adjustable I-cord drawstring to keep out the drafts. In an unusual bit of construction, double pairs of drawstring openings allow the wearer to pull the ends of the drawstring through to whichever side of the cowl is facing outwards. A tubular cast on and bind off maintain the symmetry – explanations are provided for both techniques, as well as instructions for making the I-cord drawstring and the drawstring casing. In Shetland Double Knitting from Jamieson’s of Scotland, two skeins each of four colors are required.
