Selbuvotter
This pattern is for a ‘medium’ which is around a large woman’s or smaller man’s hand size. The finished mitten is around 11cm in width, and 27cm in total length.
It’s a combination of many different traditional patterns that I liked which I’ve combined to make a Norwegian ‘Selbu’ mitten. I’m not charging for this pattern as I feel it’d be disrespectful to the talented people who’s patterns I’ve used as inspiration for this.
The cuff edging is left for the knitter; can be plain or striped but should be ribbed to fit. I usually knit around 10 rows in k2 p2 then start the cuff pattern. This cuff pattern then repeats around the bottom of the mitten then it’s increased (to make enough stitches for the pattern) and the main pattern is knitted in the round. When the thumb section is reached, it’s knitted once with some waste yarn (some bright red or something is best so you can see it later), then knitted again in the main yarn. When the main part is finished and the thumb is to be added, these stitches are picked up and thumb is knitted in the round. When the pattern is finished there should be a few stitches remaining, which I finish off with kitchener stitch to make a nice tidy edge between the two side borders.
