The basketweave effect on this coaster is created through self-intersection, i.e. a double-knitting technique that allows the two layers of fabric to pass through one another (both horizontally and vertically). A provisional cast-on and a special jogless intersecting kitchener bind-off also mean that the fabric is continuous around every edge, making it one single massive self-intersecting plane! How geeky can you get?

Another interesting fact is that you don’t have to purl a single stitch - all of the purl stitches you can see are only visible due to the intersecting effect. It’s completely identical on both sides, and to top it all off, it’s perfectly square :-)

The fabric is very thick and sturdy (ideal for hot items) yet still quite pliable, and is perfectly balanced so no blocking is required.

Experience with provisional cast-ons and the Kitchener stitch is recommended, although full instructions are given.
