Sennen Cove Shawlette
This single-skein triangular shawlette was inspired by stitch patterns traditionally used for ganseys (fisherman’s sweaters) in Cornwall, England, incorporating both ‘Cornish ribs’ and a cable pattern specifically used at the tiny fishing village of Sennen Cove in times gone by.
Worked top down and centre out, a garter tab is used to start this shawlette, and the garter stitch and faux i-cord border is continued along the top edge. The central cable panel is bordered on either side with ‘Cornish ribs’, which use garter stitch and slipped stitches to create diagonal lines flowing outwards from the shawl centre. A narrow garter stitch border neatly finishes the bottom edge.
Skills needed: Cast on, knit, purl, slipped stitches, picking up stitches, M1R and M1L increases, k2tog, cables, casting off.
This pattern is suitable for advanced beginner/intermediate knitters.
SIZING: One size – dimensions after blocking 17”/43cm x 44”/112cm.
TENSION/GAUGE:
4”/10cm = 26 stitches and 48 rows over Cornish ribs stitch pattern on 3.25mm needles BEFORE blocking
4”/10cm = 21 stitches and 46 rows over Cornish ribs stitch pattern on 3.25mm needles AFTER blocking
YARN: You will need approximately 400m/437yds of fingering weight/4ply yarn.
I used ‘Simple Sock 4ply’ (75% superwash merino/25% nylon; 400m/437yds per 100g) which was indigo dyed by The Border Tart.
