This design is the tenth of a series—twelve cowls in sequence knitting for 2024. This month, we’re working a simple spiral in a {k3, (p1, k1) 3 times, p3} sequence, worked over a multiple of 12 stitches plus 11. (I think of it as a multiple of 12 stitches minus 1.) This sequence has as many knit stitches as purls, and is essentially reversible. The right side will spiral up to the left; turn it inside-out, and the pattern will spiral up to the right. Next month, we’ll do something different with the spiral, and in December we’ll work the project flat and seam it in an interesting way to shape the cowl. Traditional instructions are included in the pattern, as well as the sequence knitting instructions.

The techniques you will need to know (or learn) to complete this project are:

  • cast on and bind off;
  • knit and purl;
  • working in the round.
