This design is the eleventh of a series—twelve cowls in sequence knitting for 2024. This month, we’re working a simple spiral in a {k3, (p1, k1) 3 times, p3} sequence, worked over a multiple of 12 stitches plus 6. This creates a reversible broken rib that is used for the lower and upper hems of the cowl, while the main body of the cowl is knit in a plain stitch. I’ve chosen stocking stitch, but you could use garter stitch if you want your cowl to be entirely reversible. Next month, we’ll work our final cowl of the year flat, then seam it in an interesting way to shape the cowl. Traditional instructions and a chart are included in the pattern, as well as the sequence knitting instructions.

The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to complete this project are:

  • cast on and bind off;
  • knit and purl;
  • working in the round.
