I decided to go with a Navajo Style pattern with this Serape Crochet Poncho. I’ve made this one for my daughter Lilly. I didn’t sew of the sides this time, my husband requested that I did it with the poncho I made him last year. I decided to use a simple stitch that’s easy to repeat so this crochet serape pattern is very beginner friendly.

For this project you’ll need:

HOOK: 5 mm hook or size H hook for the US

YARN: I used worsted weight yarn, 4 ply US, 10 ply AU

I used 1 ½ skeins of each color, so grab two of each of the 5 colors you wish to use if you are making this large size.

2 white
2 black
2 tan
2 brown
2 dark grey
Each Skein was – 100 grams / 3.5. oz or 210 meters / 230 yards

Sizing

You can adjust the size of your own poncho in length by making your beginning chain longer in multiples of 2 and repeat the crochet rows as many times you need to widen your panel.

Each panel measured 16 inc / 41 cms wide and 46 in / 118 cms in length but then you’ll fold it in half when making the poncho.

Remember you’re making 2 panels and sewing them together so each panel is half the size of the poncho. Each panel is 62 rows total.

This poncho measured 33 in /84 ½ cms wide from shoulder to bottom

and 23 in / 59 cms long once it was folded and sewn so if you want your poncho to hang down lower to cover your legs, make the beginning chain longer.
