Seven Devils, located in the North Carolina mountains, is characterized by breathtaking views and a strange name, one which historians speculate may originate in seven cantankerous brothers who lived there in the nineteenth century or from the winds that blow through the area, shrieking like devils. It is also located in the vicinity of Fraser’s Ridge, a fictional place in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels. The author has stated that Fraser’s Ridge, like Seven Devils, is somewhere between Blowing Rock and Boone.

There are deep connections between Scotland and this part of my state, as, in centuries past, many Scots emigrated from their homeland and settled here. It seemed fitting to name my shawl, inspired by Shetland haps, after a place in the same region as the mountain home of Jamie and Claire.

Knit in a cozy DK weight, this shawl is worked from the center out in a square that consists of four triangles. The center lace motif and simple Old Shale lace border are good for novice lace knitters, as is the edging, which is knitted on perpendicularly to the body.
