Seventy Four
Expo ‘74 was the first environmentally themed World’s Fair. After many other slogans had been ruled out, “Celebrating tomorrow’s fresh new environment” was settled on, and “progress without pollution” became the theme that was focused on. Expo ‘74 was held in Spokane, Washington, the smallest city to ever host a World’s Fair. However with a city slogan such as theirs, “near nature, near perfect”, it was only fitting. Today, the location of Expo ‘74 is currently known as Riverfront Park and the metal structure of the Pavilion that was built for the fair still stands at the heart of the park, along with the other attractions that were built or brought in for that summer.
This shawl was designed to represent some of the features and attractions of Riverfront Park in Spokane, The shawl starts out with a unique but simple series of texture to mimic the Pavilion and progresses to a simple stockinette section that represents the Little Spokane River that flows through the park. Lastly, a beautiful embroidery stitch makes up the lace. This stitch is meant to look like the fragrant Lilacs that the city is so known for.
