Gauge is not overly important as long as you’re using worsted weight yarn, but when using the recommended yarn and an H hook, the hot pad diameter measures approximately 10.25 inches across. Other worsted weight yarns may vary.

The project requires 4 skein of Vanna’s Choice (1 for each color), but does not use the entire skein of any one color, so you should be able to swap the color order, make the back piece a different color from the pattern suggestion, or change the color of the border without running running out of yarn.
