When I knit a shawl from worsted-weight yarn, I like to have at least 500 yards to work with. Since the Silken Mohair had only 424 yards, I knew at the outset that I would have to make adjustments. This simple garter and lace pattern stitch is easy to knit and increases the surface of the shawl.
The other concession I made was a shaped neck and shoulder area. Here, after the shawl was as deep as I desired, I decreased the width f the shawl rapidly to create two triangular tails that could be tied in front or held in place by a fancy pin. Not knowing if there would be any yarn available for fringe, I left it to last. As it turned out, there was just enough yarn for sparse fringing. If yardage runs short, knitters can substitute a different yarn for fringe, but this shawl also looks great without fringe.
