Experiment with shawl increases with me! This is an any-gauge, any-yarn project. Pick any (reasonable) shawl-friendly yarn you have on hand (anything from laceweight to worsted should be okay), especially handspun or scraps to show off the shaping. This project is worked from the top down, for a completed shawl that uses up all your scraps or finishes up at exactly the size you want.
Aside from the shaping, this is an easy knit, with cozy garter stitch and understated increases. Knit it to a large kerchief-size (the .PDF includes one idea for built-in button fastening), or keep going for a full-size wrap.
The increase scheme creates a shape that should wrap around the shoulders nicelyl at a 440+ yd size.
Yarn:
Choose your own yarn! I like using colorful handspun or scraps for this type of project, so I’m using a three-ply handspun yarn that ranges from a sturdy fingeringweight to sportweight.
Materials In General:
- 440+ yds of sockweight yarn suitable for shawls—or any reasonable yarn
- 24”+ circular needle in US5/3.75mm, or size suited to yarn/gauge
- 5-7 stitch markers
- Tapestry needle
- Optional: buttons, needle and thread
Gauge:
Any! Pick a gauge suited to your yarn. (Incidentally, choose needles suited to your gauge.)
For the sport/sockweight yarn I used, the unblocked gauge is 20 sts and 40 rows in garter stitch.
