Your choice of crochet thread or yarn and the appropriate sized hook allows for several size possibilities.

With size 10 crochet thread and a 2.00 mm hook, shell measures about 1 ½ inches wide.
With size 3 crochet thread and a 3.25 mm hook, shell measures just over 2 inches wide.

The technique used to create the unusual-looking stitches is called by various names. In the pattern, I have chosen to stick with the term ‘linked stitch’, such as ldc (linked double crochet). This linked method is actually a variation of Tunisian crochet, with the end of the ‘forward pass’ joined to another spot on the item before making the ‘return pass’.
