This cowl is designed as an ode to weaving and to the weavers’ cottages with many windows that ‘shed light’ on the weavers’ work. The edge stitch is a herringbone stitch, mirroring a woven pattern of the same name. The main cowl pattern creates mini squares reminiscent of the cottage windows. The name of the cowl is a pun: A shed is the space created by the weaver for placing the horizontal threads over vertical threads. Additionally, goats shed or molt their cashmere fiber.

The cowl is knit in the round using a herringbone stitch pattern at each hem and a mosaic slip stitch colorwork pattern to form the mini squares for the main cowl fabric.

Since the herringbone pattern results in a tight stitch, a larger needle size is required than that used for the main fabric, as indicated in the materials section.

Gauge (measured on square mosaic pattern) is 31 stitches and 50 rows to 4”/10 cm.

Colors shown in photos: scarlet with black cherry and plum with natural

A chart and written instructions are included for the main square motif pattern.

Finished measurements of the cowl:
7.5”/ 19cm length
20.5”/ 52.5cm circumference

You are able to make 2 cowls from 2 skeins (2 different colors) of June Cashmere fingering weight yarn. Guidance is given in the pattern for making the cowl any size you wish.
