This versatile rug would look great in a child’s play room or nursery.

The whole rug is worked in garter stitch (knit every row), which gives it added texture, as well as ensuring that the edges do not curl. The finished rug will measure approximately 26 inches from the bottom of the feet to the tip of the nose, with about 18 inches across the belly section.

The large body section of this rug is worked first. The legs and head are worked separately and hand-sewn on afterwards. The ears are worked last, and hand-sewn onto the top of the head. Finishing details are then added (nose and eyes).

Experiment with gauge - a looser gauge will produce a more blanket-like covering, while a tighter gauge will produce a piece that is more suited to a rug.
