Sheer V Sweater
An illusion V-neck floating between generous bell sleeves makes for a soft, ethereal sweater that recalls the figure skating dresses of my youth.

Sizes:
All of my garments are #sizeinclusive through a bust size of 62” including the intended ease in the design.
XXS, XS (S, M, L, 1X)(2X, 3X, 4X, 5X) to fit:
24-26, 28-30 (32-34, 36-38, 40-42, 44-46)(48-50, 52-54, 58-58, 60-62)”
61-66, 71-76 (81-86, 91.5-96.5, 101.5-106.5, 111.5-117)(122-127, 132-137, 142-147, 152-158)cm
Finished Garment Measurements are as follows:
26, 30 (34, 38, 42, 46)(50, 54, 58, 62)”
66, 76 (86.5, 96.5, 106.5, 117)(127, 137, 147.5, 157.5)cm
These finished garment measurements result in a sweater with 0-2” (5cm) of positive ease at the bust. This means that the finished garment will be 0-2” (5cm) larger than your actual bust measurement.

For specific yardage used by testers of various sizes, see the Sheer V Sweater Sizing and Yardage Information Spreadsheet. Note that there are not measurements for the 4X and 5X sizes, as the testers for those sizes have not yet completed their tests.
Suggested Yarn:
Ocean by the Sea Quill (Light Fingering, 100% Falkland Single Ply, 541y/150g)
Ocean by the Sea Mohair Silk (Lace, 72% Mohair/28% Silk, 459yds/50g)
Mohair and fingering are held together throughout the whole pattern, with the exception of the sheer panel, which is knit in mohair only.
Note that while I used a single-ply for my fingering yarn, you can use any fingering yarn that works for you, plied or unplied. Any fingering + lace combination you can get gauge with will work.
Also note that the sheerness of the V neck portion of the sweater will vary depending on the content of silk in the mohair blend. If you would like a more sheer V, you will want to look for mohair blends that are 60% mohair and 40% silk. If you would like the V to be more opaque, you will want to look for mohair blends that are either 70% mohair & 30% silk, or 72% mohair and 28% silk.
Mohair recommendations for a more sheer panel:
Julie Asselin Anatolia: 60% Mohair, 40% Silk ($27.00, 320yds/25g)
Ito Sensai: 60% Mohair, 40% Silk ($16.00, 220 yards/20g)
Purl Soho Tussock: 60% Mohair, 40% Silk ($19.00, 328yds/25g)
To assist in making my designs for financially accessible, I’ve created a spreadsheet of budget yarn options. You will want to reference the fingering and lace tabs for yarns for this design.
A Note about Choosing Colors:
If you would like to do a tone on tone version of the sweater, I recommend that you use a mohair that is 60% Mohair 40% Silk in order to be able to see the contrast between the V and the main body.
If you use a yarn with a higher mohair content, I suggest at least some contrast in tone between the colors you use, as the V can get lost if the colors are too similar with the fuzzier mohair.
Gauge:
20 sts & 24 rows in 4”x 4” square on main body needles, blocked
Suggested Needles:
Tubular Cast On:
US 4 – 3.5mm 16-40” circular needles. This needle should be one size smaller than your ribbing needle.
Ribbing:
US 5 – 3.75mm 16-40” circular needles. This needle should be two sizes smaller than your main body needle.
Cuff Ribbing:
US 6 – 4mm 16-40” circular needles. This needle should be one size smaller than your main body needle.
Main Body:
US 7 – 4.5mm 16-40” circular needles, and preferred small circumference needles for sleeves if not using magic loop
Choose a circular needle circumference that is at least several inches shorter than the garment measurement.
Materials:
Fingering weight yarn, mohair yarn, circular needles, stitch markers, scrap yarn or stitch holders, extra needle for 3-needle and tubular bind off, darning needle
Techniques:
knitting in the round, increasing, holding stitches, kitchener stitch, three needle bind off, wet blocking
Special Acknowledgement
I would like to credit Shay Johnson of Knit & Croshay for the marltarsia technique used in creating the neckline of this sweater. I learned the technique from her As If Tee pattern, which is available for purchase on Ravelry.
