Crochet pattern for an African Flower Snail called Shelby

The finished snail, when worked in 4ply yarn, will measure approximately 3” (7cm) nose to tail, and is 3” (7cm) high. This will of course vary with weights of yarn and hook/tension. For a larger Snail work in double knit, aran or chunky.

This pattern is relatively easy to follow but does require basic crochet knowledge of single and double crochet and the ability to work a magic ring. Everything is easily learnt from Youtube if you are not 100% sure. It is written in US terms but easily converted to UK terms. For this Snail I used Scheepjes Catona 4 ply yarn. You will need 5g of Camel (502) 5g of Caramel (506) 2g of English Tea (404) and 10g of Mercury (074). You can make this in any weight yarn, but use the smallest hook you can manage. Mercerised cotton type yarn prevents too much stretch and helps avoid the stuffing from showing, plus it isn’t fluffy so the pattern of the African Flower shows more clearly.
2mm crochet hook, darning needle, long upholstery needle,
toy stuffing, 5mm safety eyes
This will make a snail approx 3” high and 3” front to tail.

It is worked in African Flower shapes with instructions in written form with lots of photographs and handy hints to follow for assembly.
