Shell socks
Ancient fossils, shells on the sand,
traces of the surf and even fern leaves
- you might see all of these in the pattern of these socks.
You just need to pick the color of the yarn!
CONSTRUCTION:
The Shell socks are knitted top down a heel flap, a gusset construction and a wedge shaped toe. The pattern is written for the magic loop method but it can be easily adapted to DPN’s
Difficulty: intermediate.
Size: kids (women XS), women S/M, men S/M (women L).
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Foot circumference, cm/inch: 16-18 / 6 ¼ - 7, 19,5-20 / 8-8 ¼ , 21-23 / 8 ½ - 9
Heel to guff length, cm/inch: 13 / 5 ¼ , 16 / 6 ¼ , 17 / 6 ¾.
Foot length, cm– adjustable.
Foot circumference to be worn with negative ease up to 0.5–1” / 1.5–2.5 cm
Yarn: Katia Camel Socks (55% merino, 25% polyamide, 20% camel, 420 m –100 g) 1 skein or other sock yarn (Schachenmayer Regia, Opal, Austermann)
Needles: US 2 / 2.75 mm for CO, US 1.5 / 2.5 mm and US 1 / 2.25 mm for rib for size 2, at least 32” / 80 cm long circular needles or size to obtain gauge for magic loop method or DPNs if preferred.
Notions: stitch markers, tape measure, sock blockers (optional), cable needle, tapestry needle.
Gauge: 32 sts x 44 rnds to 4” / 10 cm in stockinette stitch, knitted in the rnd, after blocking.
Techniques used:Old-german cast-on, stitch Kitchener, left and right cross, lifted increases, decreases. Requires reading of charts.
TIP: Used a Kennings Yoke Pulover chart designed by Sarah Pope and which I have adapted for socks in three sizes.
