The Shelton McMurphey Johnson House in Eugene, Oregon, was completed in 1888. One of the first landscaping efforts undertaken by the Shelton family was the planting of Incense Cedar trees around the property, many of which still exist today. This counterpane square was created to celebrate the continued presence of this historic house and grounds in our city, and to support the house’s efforts to build an outdoor educational and event space, among the trees that have so long been part of its legacy. The proceeds from this square pattern will go to the SMJ House’s fundraising campaign.

The finished, blocked counterpane square should measure about 11” on each side, and can be assembled in any order or shape to create a larger blanket. One ball of Cascade 220 Superwash can make two squares; two seamed squares can also make a 10-11” pillow cover.

Each square is constructed in the round, from the center out, beginning on a set of double-pointed needles, and can be transferred to a 16” circular about halfway through the pattern.
