Experience the magic of Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Pi Shawl utilizing charming sheep motifs, including Kate Davies’ Rams and Yowes among others. Created by Knitting Camper Marianne Williams, this is a delightful project worked in our Shetland Spindrift Wool. Complete charts and instructions.

“The challenge I gave myself was to use Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Pi Shawl pattern (from Knitter’s Almanac) and create a color work shawl using my hand spun yarn. I chose a series of motifs based on sheep, and call it Shepherd’s Pi. I then knitted another version using matching Shetland Spindrift colors.

Equipment/supplies:

• Set of dp needles and circular needles (16”, 24”) of a size to get gauge. Designer started on US size 7, switch to US size 8 at 72 stitches.
• Crochet hook
• Stitch marker
• Making up needle

Note about gauge:
About 4-4.5 st/inch. Note, the stitch count is doubled after regular intervals of knitting in concentric rings. Each of these intervals will have the same stitch count throughout. At the beginning of the interval, the circumference is less than the circumference at the end. Therefore, the gauge will vary throughout the shawl. Designer’s gauge was anything from 3.625 st/inch to 5.75 st/inch and averaged about 4.25 st/in.
