This snood/scarf is my declaration of love to the nature of the Shetland Islands, to its magical colors, and to the Fair Isle knitting tradition.

This snood/scarf (further on, I’ll mention it as a ‘snood’) is worked in Fair Isle technique - stranded colorwork with a steek. It could also be worn as a scarf.

Many knitters have long wanted to try this technique but were stopped by the fear of cutting knitted fabric.

In my opinion, a scarf or wrap, that is, in fact, a rectangle, is the most convenient form in order to try your hand at stranded colorwork and steeking, and get rid of the fear of scissors.

The snood is worked in the round to the end, forming a tube. The circumference of the tube is equal to the snood length (without the finishing). The width of the snood may be adjusted as you go.

After completing a tube, you will cut a straight line along the center of the steek; then work a folded hem along all four sides of the snood to hide the cut edges. Then make a fastener - in this case the snood can be also worn as a scarf.

The steek itself is a group of extra 6-12 stitches that are made for future cutting. In this area, alternate sts of different colors, that allows stitches to stick better to each other.

A distinctive feature of the Fair Isle multicolor knitting is that, no matter how many colors and shades you have collected for your snood, no more than 2 colors are used in one row at a time. That is, there are always only 2 threads in active use.

Suggested Yarn: I recommend using 100% sheep wool, 450-600 m/100 g.
You will need at least two colors of yarn: for the background and for the pattern. You may choose two solid-color yarns; one solid-color yarn and one variegated yarn; two variegated yarns will work well here, too.
You want to be absolutely certain that your yarn wouldn’t bleed! Check the color fastness of the yarn with a swatch.

The number of colors and shades that you can use for the snood is unlimited. For the snood shown here, I used 13 colors.

Yarn usage will depend on your knitting tension, the yarn weight, and the desired finished size of your snood..
This repeating pattern allows you to adjust both length and width of the snood. For the medium size snood (approximately 140 cm x 40 cm) you will need approximately 150-200 g of yarn in total.

Difficulty level - moderate.

Skills required - stranded color (Fair Isle) knitting; picking up sts along edges; working folded hems (optional).

Gauge may vary depending on yarn weight, needle size, and your personal knitting tension.

Needles and Notions: Knitting needles 2.5 and 3.5 mm (double-pointed or circular); spare needles/cables; stitch markers; scissors; 1.75 mm crochet hook; tapestry needle.

For the snood shown here, I used Knoll Yarns Shetland Type Super Soft Wool 2/11.5 nm, 288 m/50 g

I worked 16 horizontal pattern repeats.
Finished size is 162 cm x 34 cm.
Total yarn usage: 175 g.

Я предлагаю вашему вниманию снуд на два оборота, выполненный в технике Fair Isle, многоцветного разрезного жаккарда. Его также можно носить как шарф.

Многие давно хотели попробовать эту технику, но останавливает страх перед разрезанием вязаного полотна.
На мой взгляд, шарф или палантин, то есть по сути прямоугольник - самая удобная форма для того, чтоб попробовать свои силы в круговом жаккарде со стиками и избавиться от страха перед ножницами.
Связан снуд по кругу, в виде цилиндра, длина окружности - это длина готового снуда без учета отделки, ширину можно регулировать в процессе вязания. Вяжем со стиками, затем полотно разрезаем и обвязываем каймой по периметру. Я предлагаю пришить кнопки или пуговицы, чтобы вещь можно было использовать как снуд и как шарф.

Стик - это участок шириной в 6-12 петель, по которому впоследствие будет сделан разрез. На этом участке нити разных цветов чередуются для лучшего сцепления друг с другом.

Отличительная черта многоцветного жаккарда Fair Isle еще и в том, что, сколько бы цветов и оттенков вы ни собрали для своего палантина, в одном ряду единовременно используется не больше 2 цветов. То есть в работе всегда 2 нити.

Материалы. В качестве пряжи я рекомендую использовать овечью шерсть без примесей, 400 - 600 метров в 100 гр.
Понадобится пряжа минимум двух цветов: для фона и рисунка. Можно использовать либо две однотонных, либо однотонную и секционного крашения, либо две секционноокрашенных.
Обратите внимание на стойкость окрашивания пряжи. В принципе количество цветов и оттенков, которые вы можете использовать при вязании этого палантина, не ограничено.
Я использовала 13 цветов.

Расход зависит от того, какой размер готового изделия вы хотите получить. Поскольку жаккардовый узор повторяется, вы можете выбрать любой удобный для себя размер в длину и ширину. Для снуда среднего размера (примерно 140 см шириной и 40 см длиной) вам понадобится в среднем 150-200 грамм пряжи.

Уровень сложности средний. Для успешного выполнения необходим навык вязания жаккарда, а также подъема петель и вывязывания обвязки с подгибом.

Плотность вязания: может варьироваться в зависимости от толщины выбранной вами пряжи и номера спиц.

Рекомендована пряжа: 400 - 600 метров в 100 граммах.

Необходимые инструменты: спицы № 2,5 - 3,5 круговые, дополнительные спицы или лески, маркеры, ножницы, крючок № 1,75, гобеленовая игла.

Я вязала из пряжи Knoll Yarns Shetland Type Super Soft Wool 2/11.5 nm, 288 метров/50 грамм.

Вязала 16 повторов основного узора в ширину.
Размер 162 х 34 см.
