This triangular Shetland Lace shawl is knitted all in one piece and incorporates a garter stitch centre, borders of rose trellis and tree motifs and is finished with simple lace edgings.

The shawl starts by casting on 1 stitch, and ends by casting off 8 stitches. The lace is on a garter stitch ground so there is no purling anywhere. The garter stitch centre is knit first, from the bottom point up – those stitches are then put on a stitch holder while the edge stitches are picked up for the border which is knitted outwards from the centre. The lace edging is then knitted around the border and then finally across the top, picking up the edge stitches of the border and those across the top of the garter stitch centre.

Both charted and written instructions are included in this pattern for the shawl as pictured, and also a slightly smaller variation which omits a layer of the rose trellis design. The blocked piece as pictured measured approximately 85cm deep x 176cm across the top edge, however the final size will vary according to yarn and needle choices, as well as individual knitting tension. The gauge above is blocked garter stitch from the centre.
