This collection offers ideas for making scarves in traditional Shetland lace patterns - Razor Shell, New Shell and Horse Shoe. All these laces are reversible and worked on a garter stitch background.

The size of your scarf will depend on which yarn you decide to use, and which needle size. If you use 4 ply, for example, use a 4mm, 4.5mm or 5mm needle. If you use chunky, try a 8mm, 9mm or 10mm needle. The instructions describe how to work out how many stitches you’ll want for each lace. Likewise, it’s difficult to say how much yarn you’ll need for your scarf, because that will also depend on what size you want to make. Be prepared to experiment!

I used Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift and 4mm needles to knit my samples - three balls could make a scarf.

Each lace has a chart and written instructions, and I hope they will encourage you to explore knitting lace - and find that it’s easier than you might think! I prepared this collection as my gift to the knitting community during 2020’s coronavirus global pandemic.
