Shetland Lighthouses is a headband designed in partnership with children at Scalloway School in Shetland and Light the North - the lighthouse trail, raising funds for Clan Cancer Support.

The Little Light featuring the original charted pattern is on display at Sumburgh Head lighthouse from 9th August to 22nd October 2021 - I’m delighted to have helped with that, and to offer this pattern too. For each copy sold, a donation of £1.50 will go to Clan.

The headband is one size, though you can vary this a little by changing needle sizes. It measures approx 50cm / 20” round, and 13.5cm / 5.25” deep. Instructions for converting the headband to a hat are included. I used 2.75mm needles for the rib borders, and 3.5mm needles for the charted pattern.

The sample was knitted using Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift, and I used roughly half a ball of each colour - royal (700) and natural white (104). I’ve suggested colours of Jamieson & Smith 2 ply jumper weight too. Why blue and white? These are the colours of the Shetland flag.

Four Shetland lighthouses are named - in the north, Muckle Flugga; in the east, Bressay; in the south, Sumburgh Head; and in the west, Fair Isle. The patterns used - crosses, hearts, O & X, and waves are all traditionally used in Fair Isle knitting.
