Shetland Shadows
A textured interpretation of Shetland Ruffles, in which the colored stripes are replaced by shadows and highlights. The curved ridges and shadows are created by alternating bands of stocking stitch with bands of reverse stocking stitch while working a lace pattern.
Unlike Shetland Ruffles, which requires alternating colors or a self-striping yarn to show the curves created by the lace stitches, this pattern can be worked in a plain color, a variegated yarn, or a gradation. If you’d like to work the pattern in a more colorful yarn like Crazy Zauberball, the shadows will add extra tonal variation.
The sample was knit on 3.25mm/US3 needles with one skein, 480m, 524yds of Martin’s Lab Tibetan Singles, 65% SW merino, 20% silk, 15% yak fibre, colorway O’Hara.
Dimensions: approximately 122cm/48in x 36cm/14in
For a larger project with approximate dimensions of 177cm/70ins by 48cm/19ins, allow two skeins of yarn.
Gauge: approximately 17 stitches & 30 rows = 10cm/4in in stitch pattern
The pdf includes both charted and full written versions of the pattern, with notes and instructions.
