Vikings Shields & Axes
Grab your shields and axes, and recreate great Viking battles with Harald and Hilda and their impressive longship. This fun Viking play set also makes a super knitted ornament or desk decor. The pattern includes the longship and two Vikings: Harald is the bearded Viking with an axe, and Hilda has the shield. These toys are knitted predominantly in stockinette stitch, with increases, decreases and short rows for shaping.
Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the toys are knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). Two DPNs are used to knit i-cord rails on the top of the longship, and a crochet hook is used to crochet single chains for the Vikings’ collars. These toys require attention to detail in finishing, so if you are not a fan of seaming/finishing this may not be the project for you.
NEEDLES
A pair each of 3.25mm single pointed knitting needles and DPNs (US 3).
RECOMMENDED YARN
Sirdar Hayfield Bonus DK; double knitting/light worsted weight; 100% acrylic; less than a 100g/280m skein in each colour.
NOTIONS
Tapestry needle, toy filling, a 3.25mm crochet hook, beads for eyes, cardboard and bamboo skewers for making the longship.
SIZES
One size only - The dolls are 10cm tall, the longboat is 24cm long x 23cm tall (including the mast).
TECHNIQUES
For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
