Shifting Sands Cowl
Update: 1-10-12: There was an error in row #11. Please download the updated pattern with the correction. Sorry about any confusion.
Description: This reversible cowl is entirely knit in a single ribbing pattern with a simple alternating cable pattern to give it complexity. It’s density makes for a very warm cowl. A tubular cast on and bind off gives it a professional and elegant finish, but a regular longtail cast on and normal bind off can be used instead if that better suits you.
Finished Size: 20” diameter, and 7.5” in length
Techniques Used: Ribbing, working in the round, cabling, tubular cast on, tubular cast off.
Difficulty: I would call this intermediate only because of the ribbing and added challenge of the tubular cast on and bind off. But with a regular cast on and bind off it is more of an advanced beginner.
Note Regarding Fit: Due to the stretchy nature of ribbing, there is a fair amount of sidewise stretch with wearing, so you may want to consider going down a needle size if you like your cowls to be snug around the neck.
