Only if we take care of ourselves, can we be kind to each other and the world. For many years, on the longest and darkest night of the winter, the 21st of December, I have been gathering a group of women together with a friend. In the light of fires and torches, we have
been performing ancient dances to live music in the snow to curse the darkness and make the light return. We use fire to shine for ourselves, for each other and for the world.
My mittens are called Shine to remind us that we can spread light to each other and let the world shine.
Shine is a mitten made in stranded knitting with latvian braids on the cuff. I wanted to design a mitten in swedish wool inspired by traditional patterns. Mittens in these kinds of patterns used to be knitted on very thin needles. In that way they become durable and warm.
The pattern also looks better when tightly knit so that you can use more stitches. I knit my mittens in a swedish wool yarn (300m/100g) on needles 2,0mm.
Circumference: 20cm
Length: adjustable
(Of course you can adjust the size by using different yarn and needles.)
Needles: 2,0mm or needles to obtain gauge
Yarn: 2ply 100% wool yarn 300m/100g
Colour A (yellow) 50g
Colour B (white) 50g
Gauge
34stitches x 36rounds = 10 x 10cm in
stranded knitting
I knit my mittens on double pointed
needles. Of course you can also use a
longer circular needle and the magic loop
method if you would prefer that.
