Shiv’s Scarf has a simple lace pattern which is easy enough for a beginner lace knitter and a soothing meditative lace project for those who are more experienced. Worked with larger than usual needles, the scarf knits up quickly, has lovely drape and can be made from just one skein of fingering weight yarn. What’s not to love! I made one for a friend, and one for myself.

Recommended dimensions: 160 cm (63 in) long before blocking (and before the fringe) and approx. 15-17 cm (6-7 in) wide. You can make it longer or shorter, narrower or wider. The blue sample was knitted to the recommended gauge with a finished width of 17 cm (6.75 in) after a steam blocking. The gold sample used a finer yarn and has a blocked width of 15.25 (6 in).

Needles: 6mm (US 10) or size to obtain a fabric you are happy with. Several testers used smaller needles and added extra stitches for width.

Recommended gauge: 19 st and 25 rows in 10 cm (4 in) before blocking. Gauge is not crucial for this project, although differences in gauge will affect yarn usage and the size of your finished scarf. If you choose to work it on a smaller needle, instructions are given in the pattern for how to add width.

Yarn: 300-360m (330-400 yards) of fingering weight yarn. The lace pattern will be most visible on solid or semi solid yarns with good stitch definition.

Supplies: Yarn needle, scissors, crochet hook for applying the fringe (optional).
