‘Shooting Star’ (Dodecatheon Maedia) blooms in spring and then disappears into the ground – leaves and all! – to wait for next spring. My dad and I both love this flower, and grow it in our gardens, but you can also find it in the woodlands of North America. I dyed this colour to try and capture the ultraviolet radiance of the petals. The subtle texture of this sock design is meant to complement a vibrant colour.

This sock is knit from the cuff down in a slipped-stitch textured rib. The heel flap is worked back and forth followed by a short-row heel. The sides of the heel flap are then picked up in order to resume working on the round. The textured rib is continued along the top of the foot only - leaving the sole of the foot as smooth, comfortable, stockinette. The rib pattern ends at the toe, where the toe is worked completely in stockinette and then grafted closed.

This sock was first released as the July sock for the Galt House of Yarn 2019 sock club. The “Shooting Star” colourway was specifically designed and dyed for this project. Both pattern and yarn are now available to all. The yarn can be purchased here.

Yardage: 1 full skein will be enough for the largest size, with plenty leftover to lengthen the leg or foot, if desired.
