Short Row Scarf
This short row garter stitch scarf is a great opportunity to play with color and texture: pick two or three colors of your favourite yarn or mix and match with yarns from your stash. Use solid colors, variegated yarn or hold several strands of fingering weight yarn together for a marled effect. This pattern is also a place for fluffy Mohair, suri alpaca, bouclé and ribbon yarns to shine.
Be creative and have fun :)
The plain garter stitch and aran weight yarn make for a quick knit, while the simple short rows and color changes keep things engaging: “just one more section!”.
Difficulty: adventurous beginner.
All of the color work is done through short rows, so you only ever knit using one yarn at a time. The yarns that are not in use are carried up the side of the work for a neat edge (and less ends to weave in).
Pattern details:
The pattern includes charts, written instructions and a template to plan your colors, if you are fond of planning things in advance.
Yarn and needles
You can use any aran or worsted weight yarn. Other yarns and needles will work as well; they will result in a wider or narrower scarf. Required yardage/meterage will vary as well.
For a somewhat loose fabric, I suggest:
-400 m (437 yds) of aran weight yarn and 6.0 mm
(us size 10) needles.
At 15 sts x 22 rws = 10x10 cm (4x4 inches) in garter stitch,
this will give you a scarf that is 22 cm (8.7 inches) wide
and about 200 cm (78.7 inches) long.
OR:
-480 m (525 yds) of worsted weight yarn and 5.0 mm
(us size 8) needles.
At 17 sts x 25 rws = 10x10 cm (4x4 inches) in garter stitch,
this will give you a scarf that is 19 cm (7.5 inches) wide
and about 220 cm (87 inches) long.
This scarf can be worked using as many colors as you like. Using just two or three colors with high contrast gives a bold effect. The sample was knit using 3 colors (a background color and two contrasting colors) in the following striping sequence:
contrast color 1, background color,
contrast color 2, background color.
Sample uses GGH MYLA (aran weight):
2 balls (200m, 219yds) in col. no. 07 (black, background color),
1 ball (100m, 109yds) in col .no. 10 (red, contrast color 1) and
1 ball (100m, 109yds) in col. no. 06 (green, contrast color 2)
