This is a crochet balaclava/hat pattern that looks like Shrek! The body of the balaclava is constructed from the top down, working in the round, including two eye holes. The two Shrek ears are then crocheted separately and sewn onto the body of the balaclava.

This pattern is written in AMERICAN crochet terminology. It’s suitable for beginners because it only requires a few simple stitches, but doesn’t actually teach you how to do each stitch within the pattern.
