UPDATE!!! - I am working on a blog post about these as I have come across a problem while working with them in the field, a problem with the lens’ ability to auto-focus properly. I want to make sure that I show everyone how these are to be used to make sure this doesn’t happen.

This is a pattern for what is known as Shutter Buddies or Camera Buddies. They are used to focus little ones’ attention on the photographer. This particular pattern uses a ponytail holder as the elastic base to stretch over the DSLR camera lens. This pattern fits standard size lenses, including my Canon Rebel kit lenses as well as my Canon 50mm prime lens.
