The Side Eye Shawl is an asymmetrical curved triangle shawl that is knit side to side and then turned and knit bottom up. It is turned again to add the final garter edging and the border ends are grafted together. Though the shawl is asymmetrical, it is fairly closely balanced and can be worn as a symmetrical triangle shawl. The shawl was designed using 100+ grams of wool-based fingering weight yarn and works with solids, tonals or variegated yarn. The shawl uses garter, stockinette, a loosened icord edging, as well as elongated crossed stitches and short rows. The shawl can be made larger if you use a second skein of matching yarn or stripe in a second color.

The pattern uses some stitches that are probably new to a lot of people, including elongated crossed stitches for the mesh section. A photo tutorial is included for the elongated crossed stitches. In addition, the pattern uses short rows, knit increases, purled increases, SSK decreases, purl 2 together decreases, and slipped stitches. There are some long sections that can be easily memorized as well as some short sections where you’ll need to pay attention to the pattern. Life lines are also recommended.

You will need at least one skein of wool-based fingering weight yarn but can tap into a second skein for a larger shawl. I knit this shawl in your standard 75% superwash merino / 25% nylon yarn (Knit Picks Stroll, 462 yards/100 grams, pink striped sample) as well as your standard 80% superwash merino / 20% nylon yarn (400 yards/100 grams, large terracotta sample, 2 skeins). I also knit this in 100% superwash merino single ply (Malabrigo Mechita, 420 yards/100 grams, green sample) and a non-superwash blend of 70% merino/ 30% silk (Knit Picks Gloss, bare dyed purple 440 yards/100 grams). I knit these on US size 6 (4mm) but I suspect this shawl knit on US size 5 (3.75mm) or 4 (3.5mm) would also look great.

The large terracotta sample used approximately 171 grams or 684 yards of yarn and has a wingspan of approximately 86 inches by a depth of 23 inches. The purple sample use approximately 103 grams or 453 yards of yarn and has a wingspan of approximately 61 inches by a depth of 17 inches. The green sample used approximately 99 grams or 415 yards of yarn and has a wingspan of approximately 60 inches by a depth of 16 inches.
