Sidequest Shawl builds on the reversible ribbing pattern from the Scribble Shawl to make a lace-free reversible bias-knit triangle. Work begins with a small cast-on edge, and increases, so you can pretty much knit this to any dimensions you like, provided you have adequate yarn on hand.

This is a satisfying, easy knit, especially if you’re comfortable reading your yarn! The basic pattern repeat is simple, and you can knit it in dk- to worsted-weight wool for a quick, satisfying project, or opt for very fine yarn for a light, ethereal look—the construction accommodates both of these types of choices as well.

Materials:

  • 350-700 yards of Blue Sky Yarn Woolstok, dk-weight handspun, or similar substitute dk- to worsted-weight yarn
  • One 24-48” circular needle in US8/5.0mm, or size needed for gauge.
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:
Gauge is 14.5 sts and 26 rows over 4”/10cm in pattern as written, worked flat and blocked.

Measurements:
Make this any size you want! The sample shown in grey handspun wool is 51”/1.3m across the wingspan and 23”/58cm deep.

Yarn Notes:
The sample is worked in handspun merino wool with a little silk in it, but I’ve listed Blue Sky Woolstok as the linked yarn because the grey options come close to the handspun aesthetics of the sample, the yarn comes in 150g skein options, and I’ve enjoyed knitting with it in the past. This is completely unsponsored, but I had to look up the statistics and I think the colorcard’s pretty. So here’s a link to the Woolstok yarn splash page, just because.

Note: this is a customization-friendly project that can be knit at any reasonable gauge, at any size you prefer—but gauge and dimensions for the sample will be added soon and available to everyone.
